Hey Canada! Vote—because you can.
“I feel completely empty now that I’ve told you this story. It’s my secret. Do you understand?”
“And now?”
“I don’t want to have to ask you not to repeat it.”
“Yes, but now your secret has also become my secret. It’s part of me, and I’ll treat it as I do all my secrets—I’ll get rid of it when the time comes. Then it will become someone else’s...

Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden My rating: 4 of 5 stars Not for weak stomachs. I’m not one to enjoy war writing. It’s not that I want to repress these important stories, but just a personal preference. I find it difficult to keep up with the movements, the sequence of jumps from trench to tank. I feel desperate, thinking, “Who’s going to die next? Still, I like...

A Discovery of Strangers by Rudy Wiebe My rating: 4 of 5 stars My second read through this novel which trails through the snow-swept Canadian tundra in order to find something never found. I really like this book for all its intricacies, its intelligent references to what could otherwise be quite linear explanations of linear explanations of the Canadian North. I bump it down to four stars,...

Dreams
I ought to get back to blogging, really. Or, writing something down. The last few weeks have passed entirely too quickly, and without much attempt to gather up the moments and organize them in any worthwhile fashion.
Part of it may be that my time in grad school is nearly at an end, and I’m not at all certain what comes next. I feel like the conversation is wearing out, not only myself, but...
Books of 2011
Instead of reflecting on the books of the last year, I’m looking forward to the next ones! I’m taking a Canadian fiction class, at last. Some treasured goodies on the list, and some newbies too.
A strange blog posting, I suppose, but I’m just putting the word out there that if anyone knows anything about the murder that happened in Toronto yesterday morning, please say something to someone. The victim is a member of my extended family.
Here’s the description released by the police:
The suspect is: Male
White
20 to 30 years old
6 feet to 6 feet 1 inch tall
160 to 180...
moments we live for
are these ones.

Apparently, 'tis the season...
to watch really morose films.
This Christmas break, I’ve watched a whole lot more movies than the yuje. Here’s a few:
The Road
Started off with The Road. I know this is a movie that’s supposed to teach you about the extent of human possibilities. I think I wouldn’t have been in this film, however - I’m pretty sure I would’ve wound up dead before the...
Today, from Henry Nouwen Society
To the degree that we accept that through Christ we ourselves have been reconciled with God we can be messengers of reconciliation for others. Essential to the work of reconciliation is a nonjudgmental presence. We are not sent to the world to judge, to condemn, to evaluate, to classify, or to label. When we walk around as if we have to make up our mind about people and tell them what is wrong...
